Galway Races Day 4

I've had 5 winners so far but to be honest, I haven't fancied anything too strongly at Galway until today. Today is the day the ladies try to win best dresses after maxing out their credit cards and while If your married to one of those fillies, you'll be trying to win some back today.

The best bet of the meeting so far for me is Armaramak in the 2.25.I backed this last time out and if the information is right, he should win again today. He looks a solid jumper and should relish the ground and trip and has Andrew McNamara in the saddle. A good week will be had by all if this clicks.

In the hurdle, it looks a competitive renewal with Dirar shortening up and being well backed in all the shops and now favourite. Gordon Elliott has a poor record at Galway but yesterday Hoopy hit the target. Overturn has a Scottish hurdle to his name and is a fluent jumper but not sure will he enjoy an uphill finish. Luska Lad is the class horse in the race, Fisher Bridge looks to have a fantastic handicap mark and Gloucester might get involved at a nice price each way but I'd stick with last year's winner Bahrain Storm who won his prep at Tipperary on route. He has a bucketload of weight this time but he really comes into form at this time of year and has already shown a love for the track which is half the battle

1:50 Chicago Grey
2:25 Armaramak- Best Bet
3:00Shaimaa
3:35Miss Eze
4:10 no selection
4:50Bahrain Storm
5:30Force Of Habit
6:05 no selection

At Goodwood, the big race is the Goodwood Cup over 2 Miles and Aidan O Brien's Age Of Aquarius looks to go one better than his Gold Cup second. No Rite of Passage to beat today and he had most of his rivals for today way back. He has a string of 2's to his name however and has been difficult to win with and I can see another Bridesmaid showing with Kite Wood spoiling the party. A nice price and at at better distance, take Dettori to get him in the shakedown each way. I won't get a chance to keep you up to date with the rest of the weekend as I'll be busy on the track but make sure to get no Down +4 no the handicap. Midday is the bet of the weekend in the Nassau stakes. Mister Music Man should win on Saturday at Galway and I'd give Evens and Odds a squeak in the Stewards Cup.

Galway Day 3 Preview

Its a busy day with Goodwood and Galway both on in the afternoon. I only really fancy one horse today at Galway and that is The Last Derby but be quick to get a price as Tom Segal of the racing post has gone and tipped it. I should note when himself and I are thinking the same thing, we're usually both wrong but the way this horse won back at Ascot(form subsequently upheld well) and won last time out over hurdles makes me think, he's the real deal and if with a more fashionable trainer would be favourite

3.00 Regal D'estruval
3.35 Mr Bones
4.10 Sunwake
4.45Endless Intrigue
5.25 The Last Derby
6.00 Metal Madness
6.35 Prince Jock
7.10 Unaccompanied

A winner and an lucky second yesterday at Goodwood and today I fancy Canford
Cliff to prove the real deal against Rip Van Winkle. I expect the money to come for O Brien's and we may get Evens on Canford Cliffs before the off. In the 2.10 Mark Johnston is quite bullish about Lady Eclair stating nothing can beat it, that's not like him to be that confident and who am I to disagree. Johnston has an excellent record at Goodwood and especially worth following in handicaps

Galway Festival Day 2

When I looked at yesterday's card, i thought why even bother. I fancied very little but had a go anyways. Oh well, today is another day and the racing is looks easier to solve today.

5:10 Universal Truth
5:45Rathmore Castle
6:20Siege Of Ennis
7:00Few Are Chosen
7:35Hasty Katie
8:05Fit The Cove
8:35Angel Stevens

In the first, Universal Truth was an excellent bumper horse with only one disappointing run over hurdles back at Christmas. He has been kept back this season for a novice campaign and even if its a short price favourite, nothing in the race looks in the same sphere and he should take all the beating

the 5:45 is an excellent race with a few good ones in Natal(course and distance winner) and Ninty Two Team(landed a gamble in 2007 season, from 33-1 into 14-1) and trainer Gilligan is a man to be feared. Rathmore Castle though just can't be ignored at such a huge price. He is the class act in the field and if returning to it's best form would be the most dangerous winner. It could of course show no form at all and pull himself up but that's factored into the price and worth a go in this tipsters humble opinion.

Siege of Ennis could prove the pick in a tough race to solve and Few are Chosen and Fit the Cove are Galway specialists. Few are Chosen is two from two here while Fit the Cove looks a plot horse going here when a more suitable race for the Thursday looked on the cards. This is a 50-80 rated race and Fit the Cove somehow gets in. At Galway he'd be rated about 90, so he can shoulder the burden to victory.

In the last, it's a bit of a wild dart and I'd rather have a small bet on Angel Stevens, than back any of O Briens. I hate backing an O Brien horse when he has multiple entries and Weld's horse doesn't look the best bred he has.

GOODWOOD
Two I like at Goodwood today are Lord Shanakill 3:25 and Stone Of Folca 4:00. Stone of Folca is apparently the fastest horse Jim Best has ever trained and he trained a Nunthorpe winner, he hit the front to quickly at Royal Ascot and he could win this on route to another crack at the Nunthorpe.

Lord Shanakill is just below group one but nothing else in the race looks too high of a standard and this is his chance to shine.

Galway festival day one

Its a tentative start and forgive me if I don't fill you with confidence with my selections but my main tip for today would be don't go broke on Monday. There's seven days of battling so we can't win the war today. I have a few hot ones for later on in the week, so stay tuned.

5:10 Cabernet Sauvignon
5:45 Bremen
6:20 A Word Apart
7:00Cyborg
7:35Cinnin Oir( reserve may not get in)
8:05One For Joules
8:35Mister Music Man (reserve may not get in)

Yes when you see two reserves put up, you must be wondering is this lad having a laugh, but hey, they're less likely to lose. No seriously, I simply don't fancy anything else in the race and if these horses got in, they'd have serious chances.
A Word Apart is a real no brainer. Dermot Weld maiden with Pat Smullen in the saddle, they don't lose do they? He has already been well backed with a little 11/8 last night disappearing fast. O Brien's horses don't look up to much so far.

Cyborg in the big race of the day has Katie Walsh who is now challenging Nina Carberry for her superwoman throne. Big wins at Cheltenham and Punchestown have convinced Charles Byrne to give her the ride and off a nice weight is the most obvious winner

My best bet and a nice price is Bremen. This ex Hobbs horse is best suited to fast ground and although its officially yielding at Galway, there has been no rain these last few days and with a fast draining system, it will be quick jumping ground and he's definetly worth a go for the new stable. His recent win is a big plus that they have got a new lease of life out the 7 year old

Would it be Canny to Tipp Galway?

Galway V Tipperary
This would have been a fantastic Semi final and both teams are the 2nd and 3rd best team in the country right now but we will lose one before August even begins. The betting suggests that the Canning's can enjoy next weeks races with plenty of pints in hands as their summer comes to an abrupt end. They have not caught fire at all since a few dazzling performances in the league seem like distant memories. Their scrappy draw and subsequent win over Offaly followed by a lacklustre Leinster final.

Tipperary were expected to stroll to a Munster title but were shocked by Cork, who didn't exactly frank the form. I can just see Galway opening up Tipperary with more goals here and in a tight finish Galway have shown the mettle to win while Tipp have lost the close ones. With the prices shaped like this and one bookie in particular going for Galway at 2/1, Galway are worth the bet

Verdict: Galway To Win

In the four Football Championship Qualifiers, Down look the best bet to win in Breffni Park. I couldn't believe Sligo fell to Roscommon after beating Mayo and Galway but it may spell frankly that Connacht football is at a low ebb and the form is not up to much. Down have played plenty of close ones and they wouldn't throw away a lead like Galway did that day in Sligo and I'd take them to prevail here.

The Kildare v Monaghan game is a hard one to read with Monaghan having a second half no show against Tyrone. It would be easy to write their season off now and Kildare are starting to play a
great brand of Gaelic but again the bookies look to have written off Monmaghan too early. At the current odds, its worth backing a Monaghan team that are the same price this week as last week except the opposition is nowhere near as menacing. Their score rate before the Ulster final was high and if they can pick themselves off the floor, they can win this one by more than 4 points.

Verdict
Down to win
Monaghan to win and to win alternative handicap -3 at 7/2

Galway Races 2010

Another 7 days of mayhem is about to descend on Galway. The best festival in the world is back as Galway plans to put the session into the recession. Over the years the sponsors may come and go, but the punters from all over the world keep coming back to make this one of the most celebrated pilgrimages of the season. 200,000 came to the city last year for it and with signs of recovery and pricing no longer Celtic tiger like, more and more punters will be encouraged to holiday in the city of the tribes. The picture on the left shows what this festival is all about. Serious craic.

The biggest two races the Galway Hurdle and the Galway plate are starting to take shape and whispers are in the air for a Galway winner to knock the stuffing out of John Mulholland, celebrating his 75th year in business. Fears that Paul John Gilligan could strike again with Lady Hillingdon and especially Nintytwo Team have fears raised in John Mulholland Towers that this could be a long 7 days. His big wins this season with Bertie’s Dream and Jadanli were expensive wins for the bookies. The markets are yet to come alive but there will always be a few gambles and few can forget the gamble pulled off on Cloone River in 2004. Last season Deutschland under Ruby Walsh threatened a similar public coup but only managed second behind a canny Stephen Gray on Bahrain Storm.

Early Thoughts

The plate is still looking murky with Cuan na Grai running a nice race last time out and The Last Derby coming from the same stable, it’s a hard one to solve. If any money comes for Nintytwo Team, take note as this could be a Gilligan plot horse. Bob’s Pride won last season at Galway and I would prefer it over it’s stable mate Majestic Concorde, who although has been put away since his win at Sligo to protect it’s handicap mark, doesn’t look a natural chaser and could get found out over the Galway fences. Willie Mullins is said to be delighted with Themoonandsispence.

In the Hurdle, last season’s winner Bahrain Storm showed he still has the ability at Tipperary and could achieve back to back success. Overturn will not go if it is too soft but the ground looks hard to predict with sun and rain due in equal measures. Dirar looked superb superb last time out and Gordon Elliot has a great knack of getting his horses ready for the big days. Amazing King is another would be command respect if money comes. At present, I’d side with Bahrain Storm and don’t rule out last season’s huge gamble Deutschland. He won’t have Ruby this time but he’ll be 4 times the price

Will Dublin sing the Blues...Again!!!!

The Dub's need to come together this weekend. Team spirit doesn't look to be a problem judging by this picture but two seasons on the trot the boys have fallen apart once they meet opposition outside Leinster.

This season they didn't win Leinster for the first time since 2004 and are into the unknown of the back door. They meet an Armagh team that have won this season's division 2 title and looked the business beating Derry only to come crashing back to earth against Monaghan. The Donegal win will have redeemed some confidence but let's be fair, Donegal have been useless this season.

In 2008 and 2009, Dublin provided the best best of each season ie. Back the opposition in the quarter finals at odds against. Tyrone were 9/4 and even 11/4 in some mad bookies in 2008 and last season Kerry were 11/10 despite the fact they were champions and Dublin always flatter to decieve

Armagh has to be the bet even if they don't possess the quality of Kerry or Tyrone. They have young blood coming through and have shown some signs of finally progressing from the shadow of the old Kernan side

Verdict back Armagh at 5/4

Other matches: The Ulster football final takes place on Sunday and I expect Monaghan to win their first ulster title since 1988. The manner in which they swotted Armagh and Fermanagh aside shows that this Monaghan side have upped their game. They have come close over teh years to a few big scalps including Tyrone in 2007 final and Kerry but now is the moment for teh team to take some silverware.

Verdict back Monaghan at 6/5

In the Connacht final it would be outrageous if Sligo fell at the final hurdle after beating Galway and Mayo to get there. A handicap of 4 points looks big however and I'd hedge my bets by backing Sligo to win by 1-3 & 4-6 both at 3/1. Backing both to level stakes returns an even money bet

Verdict back Sligo to win by 1-3 @ 3/1
back SLigo to win by 4-6@3/1

In the other matches Derry appeal at 5/6 and Waterford have been well supported in the handicap market receiving 3 points against Cork in the hurling and I'd be happy to follow the money there.

The Open Championship 2010

The British Open returns to St Andrews and all eyes are on Tiger Woods. He looks a broken man right now, though he still has plenty of money even if he is $720 million lighter. He made the trip over for J.P McManus' Pro Am and received a hero's reception in Limerick, where have the Irish morals gone? There will be plenty here cheering him on this week.

But Is he worth a bet? St Andrews is one of his favourite courses. He won both times in 2000 & 2005 without breaking sweat and he has managed to finish 4th in this seasons Masters and Us Open even though every hole can act like one of his mistresses, an expensive hole and every short putt is a potential Dennis Wise( A nasty 5 footer). This is his course though and with 7 places an argument that he will surely get into the mix is fair enough. It could be argued it's an each way bet to nothing but he just doesn't look like winning nor deserves to win right now. Flying home from Adare last Wednesday instead of staying in Ireland and playing links courses tells me he's not in the right frame of mind and not worth the bet. There is no logical reason to back him other than blind faith in his potential game.

Beware the injured golfer

Lee Westwood suffered a calf injury at the French Open and has started to drift ever since. He missed the playoff by one shot last season and contented fantastically at the Masters only for a magical Mickelson performance to deny him. At the Open many would say he choked, I'd agree with that assessment but would argue he just met one too good at the Masters and he now looks ready to make the jump to major champion. In 2008, Padraig Harrington was supposed to be too injured to compete and drifted out from 12-1 out to 33-1. I doub we'll get that kind of drift but he's still worth a win bet .

Harrington
himself has started to show some form without threatening to add to his last win in 2008 US Open in the last 2 majors. He has a mural on his wall of the 18th green at St Andres in his indoor practise and this tournament holds a special memory as his dad dies just before the 2005 tournament and he had to withdraw. Can he do it for his dad? Lets hope so.

Of the other Irish, Rory McIlroy has apparently never shot lower than 69 at St Andrews after 29 rounds there. He will be well supported but I just don't think his price reflects his true chance of victory and I'll give him a miss.

Graeme McDowell did fantastic at Pebble Beach and has twice led at the Open after the first day. McDowell is a fantastic golfer and a decent fella to boot but I just think his golf game will not be there after plenty of celebrating. He may have a decent plan on how to attack this course and has commented on the changes made to the 17th but at 20/1 for back to back majors, no thanks.

Of the others:
I love backing Phil Mickelson and he owes me nothing but again not worth a go at that kind of price in this type of tournament. Ian Poulter is a great golfer, so says Ian Poulter and is not a bet for me and Justin Rose is better on the other side of the Atlantic.

Sergio Garcia's form has been rank rotten recently but he does have Open form, coming close in 2005 and in 2007 only for Sunday wobbles to stop him. Regarded as the greatest player to never win a major, maybe he can keep up Spain's unreal run of form. A more popular Spanish choice this week will be Jimenez after his French Open victory. Worthy of a few wins on the European tour but not classy enough to walk off with this

Bigger priced golfers worth consideration are Chris Wood who has the best record combined of the last two Opens and loves links golf. Charles Schwartzel kicked off 2010 with a bang winning two on the bounce, his game could well be suited to the Old Course.

Colin Montgomerie would be a Cinderella story if he wasn't as lovable as the ugly sisters. He came close in 2005 and after Greg Norman and Tom Watson turned back the years, why not?

Martin Laird is another Scot to consider and has played mostly on the US Tour. He again could threaten the leaderboard at a huge price for the each way backers.

Jeff Overton finished last season 4 shots back but if we excuse 2 bad holes in the 3rd round, he could of got into the shakedown and is not a bad price each way

Conclusion: With the exception of John Daly in 1995, the winners of the Open at St Andrews tend to be the cream of the crop. Tiger(twice), Nick Faldo, Jack Nichlaus(twice) and Seve Ballesteros are the previous champions and it may be worth looking to the head of the field with a small each bet on top.

Back: Padraig Harrington & Lee Westwood
Outsider at a huge price: Martin Laird

The World Cup Final

It will be a sea of Orange as the party gets started. It won't quite be a carnival atmosphere
but they'll be playing those annoying instruments all day long. But enough about bloody Belfast tommorrow, today the greatest final on earth takes place at Soccer City.

Spain v Holland
Neither side has lit up this tournamen so far with Spain winning the last 3 games by the minimum margin and Holland winning without their traditional total football.

Holland are combining a strong team ethic, sharp passing led by Wesley Sneijder and Mark Van Bommel acting as the enforcer. Van Bommel will look to kick Xavi and Ineiesta off the park and smother the Spanish midfield however the Spanish are used to that and were comfortable for long spells against a top German midfield.

At the back, both sides are about equal while up front Spain's David Villa has been the star man while Holland's van Persie has not looked like he's enjoying playing second fiddle to Sneijder. Its the goalkeeping that I believe seperates these sides. Both sides will get a few chances but while Casillas looks ready to make those crucial saves like his stop of Klose, Stekelenburg looks susceptiable to one mistake and that's all Spain need. I expect a tight match with just one moment of magic to decide it.

Verdict: Spain to win 1-0 @ 5/1 Villa to score first and Spain 1-0 @ 18/1

Mulholland's are refunding all losing first/last goalscorer, scorecasts, and correct score bets on this match if there are more than 4 goals in it

This is the promotion that Mulholland's ran at the start of the tournament:
Squeaky bum time tonight and I can't see them getting out of it.

Something Kinda Oooh-Falmouth Stakes 3.10

There hasn't been this many good fillies on the one stage since I was"reluctantly"dragged along to that Girl's Aloud concert

Lillie Langtry like Nadine Cole is the Irish member. On paper looks the most talented and not carrying as much weight as the older brigade.

Special Duty like Sarah Harding is the controversial member having won both the French and English 1000 Guineas despite coming second in both. The stewards promoted her to first in both cases because of interference. She looks the part but I'm not convinced and have her a true second again.

Strawberrydaiquiri is the redhead of the group( Nicola Roberts to anyone interested). Very underated and gets better with age winning a big prize at Royal Ascot last time. She has her chance but she may feel out of her depth in this field. Ryan Moore is on top( of the horse) and is riding(horses) fantastic at the moment.

Rainfall like Cherly Cole slayed all the men last time at Royal Ascot. The nations darling has great similarities to this horse but hopefully isn't under the weather like her as today is the big audition now to the road to stardom. At first Cherly wasn't seen as anything special but now look at her. Rainfall with Dettori in the saddle tries an extra furlong today and if she finds it could be an absolute star beating this top class field.

I personally like the one closest to Kimberly Walsh. Her similarities are with Spacious, the oldest in the field. It looked to have Strawberrydaiquiri in it's sights last time and just failed to get past coming from too far back. She has been in other fillies shadow and it takes a true punter to appreciate her true worth. She is worth a chance in a field like this at a nice price at 10/1

Two horses that missed the Band are the ironically named Music Show and Gile Na Greine. Music show would of been a great horse to compare to Cherly Cole except its nowhere near as good and Gile na Greine would easily be one of those girls that did miss the band as its consistent without any star quality.

GAA Weekend: Can Galway get the Cat's cream?

So the recession is over, it was never really a success to begin with so best just to cancel it. We enter a brand new Ireland and even the geography boys are scratching their heads as Galway has invaded Leinster and stand on the brink of their first Leinster Hurling Championship.

Galway have not exploded into life at all since winning the League title and any repeat of the Offaly displays will see Galway take a serious hammering. David Collins (calf) and Iarla Tannian (quad) are among the doubtful, while David Burke (suspended) and Niall Healy (hamstring) are definite non-starters.

Mulholland's are keen to take on The Tribesmen and are top industry price at 11/4. I can't blame them and the only way Galway will win is after two hard battles and Kilkenny having a stroll against Dublin they may be more battle hardened at this stage and ready to catch Kilkenny cold stopping them adding a 67th Leinster title

In the football, last week didn't make pretty viewing for either Galweigians or the Yeatsmen. Having ventured into the pub to watch the match I have to admit I stopped watching after Galway were trailing by 9 points at half time. I picked up my pint and sat down near a telly showing the England Germany game. Every now and again I heard a few roars from behind me and wondered what silly eegits were still harbouring hope. When Galway scored a late goal and the place erupted I ventured over and couldn't believe e my eyes. How had Sligo thrown it away?

They now must pick themselves up and fight again in Markevich Park. It will take some doing for Sligo to raise themselves after blowing that lead and now instead of last week's 4/7 Galway are 4/5 and well worth a bet now to get their act together. Playing New york in the Quarter finals back at the start of May had Galway rustier than old barb wire fence. That should be well shaken off and now they should take them apart.

Verdict Galway to win the Football

Mulholland's Enhanced double
Galway to win the Football and Hurling this weekend 6/1

The other big match this weekend is the Munster Football final and can we get our first new winner apart from Cork/Kerry since 1993 and only our second since 1935. Limerick nearly caught Cork last season losing agonizingly by a point but can they go one better this season. I'm afraid it would be the equivalent of Buster Douglas beating Tyson or Graham Taylor beating Steve Davis.I would love to see it but you'd want to be a biggest optimist in Limerick or one of the lads mamy. I can't see it but backing Kerry at 1/8 or even minus 6 points doesn't appeal either.
