Galway Hurling Championship

This column appeared in Galway Independent on Wednesday 30/05/2013

It’s the Group Stages at last
Preliminary rounds, 1st round, another Preliminary round and a losers round. It would make you pine for the Intertoto Cup but this weekend we’ve finally arrived at the group stages of the Galway Senior Hurling Championship and it throws up a mouth-watering clash first up with defending  champions St Thomas taking on perennial contenders Portumna. John Mulholland makes Portumna marginal favourites to win the match at 4/5. Portumna are also favourites to lift the cup at 7/4 whilst St Thomas are 2/1. I think Mulholland has this spot on as it’s hard to see a team like St Thomas’ go to the well again. Clarinbridge struggled to follow up after a Championship and All Ireland success 3 years ago and now they find themselves in the group of Champions with the two favourites. I wouldn’t rule them out completely of qualifying at St Thomas’ expense. Their price has tumbled from 40/1 into 20/1 outright and 12s to 8s to win the group and they should make light work of Killimordaly this weekend.
In Group B, it really is case of throwing darts. Any two from 4 can come out here with Gort and Turloughmore marginal favourites to progress.

Group C is one for a sporting bet. Everybody wants an outsider to keep an eye on and this season Kinvara could be the one. They have been in the doldrums since a final appearance in 2007 but they have shown an upward curve this season and keep an eye on young Conor Whelan in the championship. 66/1 outright might seem farfetched but 7/1 to top group C and 5/2 to beat Loughrea this weekend is not.

Group D is about as good a group as One Direction and the only direction the two sides that emerge from here will be straight out of the championship at the quarter final stage.

Tip of the Week
I tipped up Dawn Approach in the 2000 Guineas a few weeks back and he can follow up with his second classic in the Epsom Derby. Only last season we said goodbye to Frankel but like buses a new superstar has emerged immediately. Dawn Approach has both speed and crucially is bred to get the trip, he’s uncomplicated unlike his sire New Approach who also won the Derby. Wait to the morning of the race and you could get 6/4.
