Lucky 15 for Corofin

Lucky 15 for Corofin
The intercounty players will have to forget about Sundays poor result in Pearse stadium as we dive into the opening fixtures of the Galway Senior Football Championship. Champions Salthill/Knocknacarra begins their defence against Carna/Cashel at Pearse Stadium. Last season a great deal of luck with a soft route aided their cause and I’d avoid them for a repeat. Corofin are the hot favourites this year and I mean red hot. Chalked up at 7/2, they have been backed into 2/1 with John Mulholland’s book looking more lopsided than a 3 legged giraffe. The last time I saw similar money for Corofin was in 2011 and 2009 and both times Mulholland was out of pocket. Somebody likes what they are seeing and truthfully they look hard to beat this season. Their biggest danger will come from Milltown. A strong panel that’s training hard and the marquee signing of James Kavanagh gives them a fighting chance and they’re real contenders this season. Tuam have suffered back to back final defeats and the appetite seems to be gone in camp and betting wise they are friendless from 6/1 out to 10/1. Killererin have Padraig Joyce whose retirement from Galway will mean a 7th title for his club is his season highlight. Two outsiders to consider are St James at 12/1 and Cortoon Shamrock at 12/1. St James under the stewardship of Frank Doherty has a strong panel with 4 county players and opens against the team ‘The Doc’ led to All Ireland glory Caltra. Cortoon have a strong contingent of the u21 All Ireland panel and can go far this year.

A German Shootout
It’s an all German final at Wembley this weekend and Merkel, Hasselhoff and Co could be in for a nervy tie. Bayern Munich has ran away with the Bundesliga but Borussia Dortmund have looked lethal in Europe and I see this going all the way to the finish. Germany regard England as the Motherland of missed penalties and wouldn’t it be apt if this match went to Penalties at 6/1 . Two German teams in a penalty shootout? That could go on forever

Tip of the Week
Deciding between Donegal and Tyrone is like trying to choose between the Seoige sisters so I’m going local for the bet of the week. Cortoon should beat a Tuam side on the slide at a tempting 11/10
