WGC Championship
So Tiger Woods is 9/2 to win a tournament he has won 7 times out of 9 visits. 9/2 to win when he was 9/5, 11/4, 6/4 and 5/2 in his last 4 victories here. 9/2 to win on a course he has won by 11 shots with a winning score of 21 under.
Last season, it turned into an epic with Padraig Harrington pushing him all the way to the line until poor Padraig was put on the clock for taking too long with his shots and his game fell apart late on.
Tiger will be desperate to win next weeks final major to say goodbye to his worst season as a professional and as a married man. He played well in the Masters and the US Open but never got going at the on his favourite course St Andrews so why should he go better here?
Well, I don't know to be honest. His head looks destroyed and if he can't show his form at St Andrews where he finished 23rd, why do it here. Jeremy Chapman, racing post's resident golf tipster reckons he can and advises you to "bet like men" at that price.
My own fancy however would be last season's second. Yes our own Padraig Harrington. Last season, his game was rank rotten till he showed some form here and had a second USPGA in sight til he found the water at the 7th on the Sunday. He had Tiger on the ropes until that clock incident and led here the first 3 days. At 20/1 with each way 5 places, he's your only man. He was scrambling from the car park last week and getting up and down like a well oiled seesaw. Its an incredibly long par 70 course and a man who can save par from anywhere is what is required.
Westwood and Mickelson are both popular in the betting, both looking to take the number 1 mantle this weekend. Mickelson has shown form around here but I'll wait for next week before thinking of backing him.Rory McIlroy blew up last week with the expectation of favourite too heavy a burden while McDowell still seems to be celebrating and not showing enough to put 4 rounds together.
Verdict Back Padraig Harrington to win WGC @20/1
