All Ireland football final Preview 2012 Donegal v Mayo

Jimmy’s winning matches, Rorys Kavanaghs belly is ready to burst and Pat Spillane’s is still bruised from the digs he took on the Jones Road. There is a lot of hype and superfluous coverage of Donegal’s road to Croker and Mayo fans seem to be delighted to see another county go nuts approaching the big day while their own county seems to have a more subdued build up this year.

Back in May I tipped up the first All Ireland final between  Ulster & Connacht since 1948. However I was a few miles out selecting Tyrone over my own Donegal to meet Mayo in the final. My original synopsis was that Donegal, albeit defensively superb lacked a few more scorers to take the weight of McFadden & Murphy’s shoulders. It has to be said right from the get go against Cavan, this Donegal side showed far more variety to last seasons  with scorers come from everywhere on the park and by the time Donegal met my own pre tournament selection Tyrone, I could begin to dream about Donegal going all the way if they swatted aside Mickey Harte’s men for a second successive year in Ulster. Since then Donegal have gone from strength to strength destroying Down before beating the heavyweights of Munster Kerry and Cork with a greater manner of ease than 2 point wins would indicate. All this has brought Donegal into this All Ireland as raging favourites. Can they now live up to the plaudits of Joe Brolly and co?

Mayo have not surprised me one iota this season and there is no fluke about their run to the 23rd. They destroyed Down too  and the fact both sides hammered the 2010 runners up has been taken with a grain of salt. It shouldn’t be for although Down are badly missing the likes of Marty Clarke, they are still a top 8 side in the country and put it up to both sides for large spells before being completely overrun. Mayo’s win against Dublin was simply breathtaking for the first 50 minutes with even rival manager Jim McGuiness admitting they looked unplayable. Donegal and Dublin are tactically very similar but Dublin were missing one component that it’s hard to see Donegal missing on Sunday: Hunger. Dublin’s gameplan is all about work rate and intensity and if the hunger is not there to apply it, they look ordinary which they have done this season. Dublin did get into a rhythm late on when it looked like Mayo’s incredible work rate seemed to leave the tank empty and the players were out on their feet from the 60th minute. When Bernard Brogan was one on one with the David Clarke, a more confident Brogan would have slotted it home and Dublin would have went on to win the match. As it was Clarke stayed large and Brogan struck it straight at him.

There are a lot of similarities between Donegal and Mayo. Both sides are in their second year with McGuiness and Horan. Both sides are beaten semi finalists from last season and back to back provincial champions. They both put an emphasis on the collective over the individual and have seen big stars drop out of the panel in Cassidy & Mortimer. They are both genuine top 4 sides who showed no luck in getting to this final and could be argued are genuinely the best two sides in the country right now.

The Curse of 51
Mayo still have four lads remaining from that panel that lifted Sam 61 years ago and unless 4 big pillows come in the middle of the night, Mayo are still supposedly destined to not win on Sunday. Mayo have lost the last 4 finals to sides in yellow and green and the last time it was an Ulster Connacht final, Mayo lost that too. We can also throw in the fact Donegal beat Mayo the last time they met in the 2007 League final and all the omens start to point to another year of hurt. But this of course is all nonsense and I really have been impressed with how James Horan has gone about his business this year. He has talked about game one of five, game two of five etc. He barely celebrated the win against Dublin while his counterpart was running onto the field like a mad loony to celebrate with his players. This is just the type of prep Mayo need and Mayo people themselves haven’t lost the run of themselves bar the odd inedible looking green and red sausages.

Where the match can be won and lost
Will Mayo change their game to combat Donegal? It didn’t work for Kerry or Cork and if Horan tries it, they’ll be dead in the water. What impressed me most in the semis was the quality of some of Mayo’s scores. They were scoring points having shaken off multiple Dublin defenders, exactly like they will come up against Donegal.  When playing Down they showed a real eye for goal as well and this is an area Donegal can be exploited against. Down showed in the Ulster final that by running straight at them down the middle at pace, you can open up gaps. Down only came away with 2 points on those two goal opportunities but Mayo will be more clinical. Donegal are rightfully favourites on Sunday but one market they should not be favourite is the 1st team to score a goal market. Donegal scored a lucky goal against Kerry and never really looked like scoring a goal against Cork. Mayo will look to score a goal in 1st half whether they are behind, level or in front and hoping to create daylight between them. All in all I expect Mayo to have at least two cracks at a goal before Donegal attempt one and in my humble opinion, this is the type of market that is priced based on match odds rather than actual probability. John Mulholland  is going money back if Mayo win on first/last goalscorers so perhaps punters should look for even bigger odds by selecting the actual player to put the ball in net.  Looking at Mayo’s forwards and thinking about how the goal will develop, Michael Conry would be my choice at 12/1.

I have heard my own Donegal compared to many teams like Armagh 02, Tyrone 03-08 even compared to other sports teams like Barcelona but I like the comparison with one of the stars of 2012, Usain Bolt. Donegal are just like the Jamaican in Green and Gold. They start slow, put the game to bed in the middle and slow down at the finish when victory looks assured. I expect this game will be very tight for large spells, Mayo to lead at half time, Donegal to come back strong from 35 minutes  to 55 minutes and take a hold of the game while Mayo will come back with a late rattle but go down fighting by 1-3 points. I could have the green and gold tinted glassed on however so the bet I’d most recommend would be there to be less than 3 points in the match come the final whistle

Recommendations for bets

5 Points: Mayo to score 1st goal of game @6/4
3 Points. There to be less than 3 points in the game @ 8/11
1 point: Michael Conroy to score 1st goal 10/1(money back if Mayo win) @ 12/1
1 Point: Mayo to lead at Half time, Donegal to win at Full time @ 9/2

All Ireland Football Preview 2012

This year is certainly the most exciting championship to date for us in John Mulholland offices as our head honcho Alan Mulholland is now also head honcho for the Galway senior team. I expect John Mulholland’s prices to come under more scrutiny than ever this season.

Before I go any further, let me point out explicably this is my preview, Kevin, the Donegal eegit in the booth’s opinion so I won’t be doing any Galway cheerleading for the boss. I’m like one of those Roman lads whispering into the emperor’s ear “Your only  a man”, or more to the point “Donegal will knock you out in the qualifiers”

Lets start with Alan’s own Province

Connacht

Galway are 5/2 to win their first Connacht title since 2008 but they’ll have to do it the hard way. Roscommon will be no easy task this Sunday and if they overcome that, Sligo stand in their way. Sligo had a poor 2011 but signs they could come be coming back with an easy win in New York and a competent league campaign including a win over Roscommon in their last match. The team to beat however is Mayo who looks to have hit a real swagger in their step this year. An easy FBD title was followed by big wins in the league campaign against Dublin & Kerry then falling to Cork in the final. They look a real solid bet at 8/13 and at 14/1 to win Sam will have their followers. Make sure to back them ew however as although a final looks very realistic, Mayo men would sneer at Man City’s supposed  44 year hex.

Ulster

What a minefield. My own Donegal finally got their hands on the prize after 19 years last season but they have to overcome a likely route of Cavan, Derry, Tyrone and Down to lift the Anglo Celt cup. Tyrone have an away trip to Armagh to overcome themselves but they look to be back as a genuine top 4 side in Ireland and I’d be inclined to take them at 2/1 to win Ulster.Down look to have the soft side of the draw but injuries have plagued their build up and I’d make them underdogs against any of the 4 big guns Tyrone, Armagh, Derry or Donegal in the final.

Leinster

The draw has it scheduled for Dublin to meet Kildare in the final and instinct would make me plump for Kildare at 5/2 over Dublin at 8/13. They won Division 2 despite having being under the cosh at various stage s to both Galway & Tyrone in the final two games but got the job done. The off season has been all about the Seanie Johnstone saga and he may indeed be the final piece of the jigsaw. The problem for Kildare backers is although their forwards are good, they are not top class and lacks a real ‘go to guy’ in high pressure situations. Top class backs will find ways to stop them and although I’d be happy to take 5/2 for Leinster, I’d pass at 9/1 for Sam. One side to perhaps have a good fist of Leinster is Longford. 66/1 winners may look a bit mad but I expect them to take the scalp of Laois in the first round.

Munster

Kerry or Cork?, Cork or Kerry? People slag off the SPL for its old firm dominance but only one other winner in over 75 years means Munster is the biggest two horse race in sport. The only saving grace is that they meet in the semi finals so one will be thrust into the qualifiers a round earlier. Of the two Kerry look ahead of Cork in my pecking for All Ireland glory and 12/5 Kerry v Cork 10/3 looks about right. Cork just has not convinced me the last two seasons despite winning in 2010. Their last great display was against Tyrone in 2009 and they look mentally weak come August & September.

Who will win the All Ireland?
The bet for this year’s championship is Tyrone at 10/1. I was slightly disappointed they allowed Kildare back in and lost the Division two final but Mickey Harte has the right balance of youth and experience in his squad. Harte does not take any competitions easy and right from the Dr McKenna cup, Tyrone have shown a desire to reclaim their place at the top table. Successive defeats to Dublin will have hurt and I see them going through the front door all the way to the final. Who will they meet? At 13/2 to reach the final, Mayo looks to be a cracking bet. Both sides will avoid each other if they both win their provinces.

Recommendations
2 Pts Tyrone to win All ireland at 10/1
2 Pts Mayo To reach final at 13/2

Six Nations 2012

A mild winter comes to an end and spring breakes into a siberian winter so we know the Welsh will be fine after all their ice training in their Polish gulag.Last year I correctly predicted England would prevail so here's hoping lighting strikes twice.

Ireland-Verdict: 1st

How will Ireland cope without our greatest player? Would we have beaten France in 2007 and so won the Grand Slam if Brian was fit. Would we have won against England in 2008 in our only defeat since 2003 if Brian was fit? Both times the likely answer is yes and it will be impossible to really replace him.

The difference there and here was he got injured when we were expecting him to play. Ireland has had months to adjust to life after Brian and the provinces have been electric including O Driscoll’s Leinster. Of course we would be better with but we can win and Declan is obviously more keen to win this Six Nations than blood new players. With IRB rankings in a World Cup draw year and the Lions job to be decided, anything less than a Six Nations title would be a failure

We’ll know our fate inside 2 weeks but we’re meeting Wales at the perfect time and even a defeat to France may see us collect the title as I expect France to lose later in the tournament.
9/2 is too generous to turn down

France
-Verdict: 2nd

The Liermont era is over and France are again the side to beat after losing unluckily to New Zealand in the final. They have England and Ireland in the Stade de France and looking at their 22 shows what depth they have to have players like Parra, I Harinordoquy & M Mermoz on the bench. It is their tournament to lose and hopefully they'll do just that. I cannot see them beating Wales though on the final day even if they are coming to win a Grand Slam

Wales-Verdict:3rd

After watching this youthful side destroy Ireland and look to have the better of France in the semi finals, they immediately went to the top of the market for this seasons Six Nations however no cryotherapy chamber can hide the fact Wales are battered and bruised going into this campaign. The likelihood is the bodies feel like the year is in May rather than February and injuries to key positions could cost Wales for the first 3 matches. Ireland are meeting them at the perfect time and even if Jamie Roberts gets on the field on Sunday, I refuse to believeit will be at full fitness and he was vital in their world cup win. Priestland , Lydiate & Rees also injured and Shane Williams retired, it’s hard to see them winning at the Aviva. Win however and they will be favourites and by the time France roll into town, they’ll be near full strength again

Scotland-Verdict: 4th

I have always rated Scotland higher than most and I can see them winning against England in Murrayfield and running Wales close the following week but they don’t score tries and that doesn’t look like changing until Tim Visser gains nationality in the summer. Two wins would be a good campaign

Italy-Verdict: 5th

Italy are promising big things and have moved their home against England to the Stadio Olimpico and will be the biggest attended game ever ni Italy. Last season they defeated France and should have defeated Ireland and I can see them in with a real chance of winning both home games this campaign. Scotland will be seen as the most likely but England could find themselves bottom of the pile after two supposed easy matches

England-Verdict: 6th

Let me say of course it’s a longshot to back England for the wooden spoon but fortune favours the brave and at 12/1, it’s worth a nibble. England could be anything and they need this Six Nations with no expectation or pressure for a new line of players to find their feet. Their backline has explosive talent in players like Christ Ashton and Ben Foden but I don’t consume much Sky hype and one team for 8 in the Heineken cup quarter finals shows the strength of English rugby right now
